What is rayon from bamboo?

Rayon is a natural material made from cellulose obtained from wood pulp. Different types of fabric such as viscose, modal and Lyocel (also called Tencel - a registered name for this process), are created with rayon.

As for bamboo, it is one of the fastest growing invasive plants. It then overproduces by itself. What is interesting about bamboo is that no pesticides are necessary for its growth. Also, bamboo forests require four times less water than cotton, in addition to absorbing 30% more CO2 and releasing 30% more oxygen than other types of forest (Mros, 2020). This plant is also biodegradable.

Bamboo rayon is therefore a textile made from cellulose obtained from bamboo wood pulp. Attention! Not all rayon from bamboo is eco-friendly. Since bamboo wood pulp must be mixed with a solvent to obtain fibers, it can be very chemical. What can ensure the ecological aspect are certifications.

What is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification?

Oeko-Tex certification guarantees the eco-responsibility of the fabric in its production method. The objective of this label is to allow consumers and businesses alike access to ecological fabrics without chemical substances harmful to health, in addition to taking the environment into account.

Attention! Oeko-Tex does not mean organic. An organic fabric can be Oeko-Tex certified, just as an artificial fiber such as polyester can be. In all cases, this certification guarantees the eco-responsibility of the fabric in its production method.

Warning 2! There are different Oeko-Tex certifications. Although this label takes into account many criteria, it is recommended to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, which covers all processes through to the finished product.
